Decision Making

Making good decisions can help to move the business forward, but it can be a challenge. When faced with limited information and short timeframes, it can seem as though people need an immediate answer, but good decisions require judgement together with a mix of analysis, experience and knowledge.

Some people overestimate their ability to make sound decisions, whereas others seem unable to reach any sort of decision let alone a good one, but it is a necessary skill to develop as the business world is full of uncertainty and ambiguity. Good decisions balance the need for quality with the need for timely action, remembering that it isn’t realistic to be 100% right all of the time. Making a judgement based on a reasonable amount of analysis, experience and knowledge should lead to a decision that is right enough whilst still allowing time for the decision to be effectively implemented.

Are you tempted to bend the rules?
Maintain ethical standards by considering the consequences and promoting honesty and professionalism within your team.

Are you unsure whether to involve others?
Involve others with relevant expertise or perspectives to enhance decision-making, especially for complex issues or when developing your team.

Do you struggle to make the tough call?
Balance different factors and have the courage to make timely, well-considered decisions, reviewing them over time for improvement.

Do you take the obvious option?
Encourage debate and explore alternative options to ensure the best possible decision, rather than settling for the first suggestion.

Are you just going through the motions?
Avoid relying solely on past decisions; analyse current data, challenge assumptions, and consider alternatives for relevant decisions.

Do you find it difficult to know where to start?
Define the context and scope of your decision, then gather and analyse data to evaluate your options and measure success.
